First Impressions

Malcolm Gladwell wrote a fantastic book entitled ‘Blink’. In that book he postulates that most people make up their mind about something, or someone in the first seven seconds. The other day my wife & I visited a financial planner. He was referred by a

good friend. His 30 years experience was impressive. The presentation was carefully planned and contained numerous visuals. Nancy & I do not plan to use his services,

let me tell you why.

When we entered his office suite, a young, buxom lady with a very revealing blouse greeted us. Did I mention the blouse was very revealing? A few minutes later, an administrative person checked a computer screen and asked if we were

Jeff & Nancy Pastore. I quickly looked at my wife and asked if she was doing some financial planning with any other men. The receptionist looked confused when I asked her if my wife had been there with another man since my name is Paul. Nancy smiled as she recognized my weird sense of humor.

After a few minutes our prospective planner appeared in a short sleeve casual shirt,

a pair of shorts, and rubber soled boating shoes. He promptly told us that he found Phoenix hot in the summer, and spent 100 days a year in California. During his presentation he referred to me as, “the big guy”. For example, he said since my wife is seven years younger me, she would outlive “the big guy”. But, he was sure “the big guy” would want to provide for her. When he asked me if I had an exit strategy I told him cremation. Chalk one quip up for the big guy.

We decided to think about his services rather than sign near the little flags that were on the paperwork. After we left and Nancy closed the car door, she looked at me and asked if I thought the office personnel were underdressed and over exposed. I agreed, and prayed that none of the staff in our office were giving the same wrong first impressions.
