Younger Next Year

What do you do to combat stress from the real estate market?  Chris Crowley & Henry Lodge have a great book entitled Younger Next Year. The subtitle is A Guide To Living Like 50 Until You’re 80 And Beyond. Their advice for the middle age practitioner is, “Nothing you will do in the next third of your life will be as important as exercise.

The authors believe our choice is to grow or decay. Their research indicates that vigorous exercise cuts your risk of heart attacks in half. And, in twenty years, failure to exercise six days a week will seem as self-destructive as smoking two packs a day. Their suggestion is an aerobic workout for 45 minutes at 60-65% of your maximum.

I recently joined a spin class at a local gym. It’s a great way to get a low impact aerobic workout in a group setting while being motivated by an instructor and some upbeat music. In addition to burning calories, it’s possible to build your social capital.

Another way to become younger next year is stay involved in group activities. Isolation can turn fatal. Did you realize that simply having a dog in the house would substantially decrease the likelihood of a second heart attack? An empty house can double the risk of another attack. Women who are involved in a breast cancer support group lived twice as long as solitary survivors.

As the market seasonally slows for the holidays, it becomes easy to eat more and exercise less. Studies have shown a strong correlation between obesity and cancer.  But, you can be younger next year by knowing your glycemic index, and eating more fruits and vegetables with different colors.

It is possible to become younger next year, and in the years to come. Exercise, altruism, compassion, and love are great goals to balance your real estate productivity and prolong your life.
